Day 6 of our 7 night Atlantic Coast and Iberia cruise on Queen Anne took us to Gijón, a charming coastal city in northern Spain. It was our first time visiting Gijón so we were excited to see what it had to offer.
Room Service Breakfast
We started our morning with room service breakfast, which arrived a little earlier than expected but the food was still hot on arrival which is always impressive for room service. There were a couple of errors this morning, for example Laura ended up with a blueberry muffin instead of the English muffin one she’d selected but overall, it was a great way to start the day without rushing around.
A Day in Gijon
After a relaxing coffee in the Corinthian Lounge, we took the shuttle into town. The journey was about 20 minutes, shorter than advertised, and we were soon wandering along the waterfront. Gijón really surprised us. The harbor area was pretty, the weather sunny, and it was easy to navigate on foot. We found the old Roman Baths which turned out to be free to enter and well worth a look.
We made our way uphill towards the fort area, which offered some brilliant views across the coastline. The walk was a little steep in places but manageable. Unfortunately, a lot of shops and restaurants were closed because it was a public holiday (All Saints Day), so we weren’t able to sample the local cider as planned. Still, it was a lovely wander through town.
A Lively Evening
That evening we skipped pre-dinner drinks and went straight to the Britannia Restaurant. We didn’t book, but walked in just before 6:30 PM and were seated straight away. Service was a little quicker than on previous nights, and our waiter was friendly.
After dinner we saw comedian John Courtney in the Queen’s Room. It filled up quickly, so we were lucky to get a table. He was brilliant, funny, clever, and had the whole room laughing. Afterwards, we went over to the Royal Court Theatre for Let’s Dance, a high-energy show from the ship’s cast, and one of our favourites so far.
We finished off the night at the Bright Lights Society. It was the busiest we’ve seen it all week which meant there was a great atmosphere and lots of dancing. We stayed out until around 2am, then capped off the night with room service. This time we just went for two pizzas, and they arrived quickly and were piping hot.
Pleasantly Surprised
We weren’t sure what to expect from Gijón, but it ended up being a really lovely port stop. And back on board, it was one of our favourite evenings so far there was good food, great entertainment, and we had a fun night out.
