A Day in Haugesund: Exploring Norway with Sisters on the Seas
Day six of our Norwegian cruise aboard P&O’s Iona took us to Haugesund, and it was another great day. Here’s what we got up to.
MDR Breakfast
We began the morning with breakfast in the Coral Restaurant, which is one of the main dining rooms onboard. This is a much more relaxed option than the buffet as you get table service rather than having to collect your own food. The cooked breakfasts were delicious, and the calm atmosphere was a welcome change. If you prefer a slower start to your day, we’d definitely recommend it.
Exploring Haugesund
Armed with Hop-On, Hop-Off bus tickets (which we’d purchased earlier in Ålesund at a discount), we set off to explore Haugesund. The bus took us through the city and out into the countryside, stopping at some interesting sites like Visnes Mining Village (where the Statue of Liberty’s copper was mined) and the Viking Village.
While we didn’t get off the bus at every stop, the scenic journey itself was a lovely and included crossing the large bridge giving us some great views of Iona. Back in the city, we had a wander around, visited the church, did a bit of souvenir shopping, and treated ourselves to ice cream in the sunshine.
Back onboard
Back onboard, we grabbed a quick lunch from Taste 360 which is one of our favourite lunch spots. There are pizza, fries, chicken nuggets and burgers available from here and it is all grab and go, so no waiting around.
For dinner, we headed to the Keel & Cow, another of our favourite restaurants on board. Laura had the sticky duck drumsticks and a massive spatchcock chicken, while Lizzy enjoyed a perfectly cooked steak. Mum and Dad loved their meals too and we skipped dessert as we were absolutely stuffed!
Evening Fun
The evening started with a fabulous show from ODY-C in the theatre, followed by a lively visit to Brodie’s where karaoke was in full swing, there was no participation from us though. We ended the night in the Club House with music and dancing a perfect way to wrap up the day.
Final Thoughts
Haugesund was a joy to explore, especially in the sunshine. The Hop-On, Hop-Off bus made it so easy to see the highlights, and dinner at the Keel & Cow was a real treat.
